[8/26] Architect: Cambridge Seven Associates. The “T” is a Helvetic font and the colors are chosen for various reasons. The map contains color-coded subway lines: Green stands for the Emerald Necklace; Blue for the ocean; Red for Harvard University; and Orange because Washington Street was formerly called Orange Street. The color coding is formally implemented on maps and signs in 1966, and the so-called “spider map” was inspired by Henry Beck’s work for the London Underground in the 1930s.
